At last! Here is the official video and write-up for my Kickstarter project on my actual website! You still have to go over to Kickstarter.com to pledge, CLICK HERE, but can now have the luxury of being pitched at without leaving the screen. Only a little over 2 weeks left, and I’m scarily far from my funding goal, but strange and wondrous things do happen in this world and I’m frequently open to all of them. Enjoy, support, and remember, people who pledge to Kickstarter projects are proven to make more money, have better sex, and look better in spandex.

Have you ever wondered what it would be like to walk away from civilization as it is, from all that you have been acclimated to believe that being alive is about? My name is Kimberlie and I’m about to find out.

I’ve been noticing that there are people in this world that don’t voluntarily integrate into our normal society. I’ve tripped over them occasionally in my travels, in the woods, in cafes, in odd little camps and communities. They seem happy. I realize that it’s very easy to romanticize a life like that, imagining freshly-caught fish over the campfire and idle days journaling all day about the meaning of life, but I am determined to find out what it is really all about. I want to experience it, find others that are experiencing it, make them tea, and get them to talk. I intend to find out if life is possible this way, if it creates an ambient bed of happiness for the person living it, and how it can be done legally, gracefully, and without smearing my lipstick.

The Experience

The plan is to walk away (literally and with great fanfare) from my life in Brooklyn, New York and head south along the Appalachian Trail. After completing the trail, I will then head west onto a network of smaller trails along the southern periphery of the United States. Along this route I will join up with a Hobo convention, a Renaissance camp, a Rainbow gathering, and other people in subcultures that I already am aware of, and hopefully with some that I will become aware of. I will then begin the Pacific Crest Trail in California and head north to its terminus, completing all 2,650 miles of it with varied and interesting people. I will then enter the “flaneur” part of the journey, intentionally  allowing open space and time to research and pursue new trails, new people, and new experiences that are outside the range of normal civilization. I will return to Brooklyn when three years has passed. All throughout this time, I will be doing a whole bunch of writing, communicating, and figuring it all out. My legs and fingers will become deft and muscular.

The Book

The urgent point of this journey is to share the experience with you. I will be doing an immense amount of documenting, writing stories about people and situations I encounter, and amassing a wealth of knowledge about long distance hiking, minimalist alternative lifestyles, and nomadic existence in a modern world. The book will serve as an entertaining story packed with valuable information. You’ll want a copy. Keep your eye out for chapter outlines and preparation stories in the updates section.

The Money

The funding will be used for an initial purchase of dependable gear and clothing, as well as a very lightweight computer and smartphone. I will also be purchasing a SPOT locator device, making it possible to communicate with you from all the little corners of nowhere and to be tracked (let the stalker in you come alive!). I will need to provide myself with sufficient food, by far the largest part of the budget. I will also need to frequently replace my shoes and gear, pay for cell and SPOT service, and cover any emergency transportation costs, band-aids, sunscreen, ibuprofen, batteries for the gps, cards and postage, and leg waxing services (just kidding). The funding also will cover an initial small printing of the finished book as well as an edited and lovely digital version. I will keep an updated Excel chart of detailed expenditures on the “Updates” page for those who love Excel charts (who doesn’t).

I hope you’ll come along with me on this journey. It will be at least entertaining, probably informative, definitely life-change inspiring.
